Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Women's empowerment is critical for achieving gender equality and promoting sustainable development. In Nigeria, particularly in rural areas, women often face significant barriers to empowerment, including limited access to education, economic opportunities, and healthcare. Print media, as a powerful communication tool, has the potential to promote women's empowerment by disseminating information on gender equality, legal rights, and available empowerment programs (Chukwu, 2024). In Sokoto South Local Government, Sokoto State, where rural women are often marginalized, print media can play an instrumental role in informing women about various empowerment programs, such as skills development, financial literacy, and access to micro-credit services. While national and regional media frequently cover gender-related issues, local print media has a unique role in reaching rural women, who may be excluded from digital media platforms. Despite this potential, there is limited research on how local print media influences women's empowerment programs in Sokoto South. This study seeks to appraise the role of print media in promoting such programs among rural women in this locality.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite various governmental and non-governmental initiatives aimed at empowering women, rural women in Sokoto South continue to face significant challenges in accessing information about empowerment opportunities. Print media, specifically local newspapers, have the capacity to bridge this information gap. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of print media in promoting women's empowerment programs at the grassroots level. Many rural women remain unaware of the available programs that could improve their livelihoods, partly due to limited access to information and cultural barriers. The problem, therefore, lies in the underutilization of print media as a tool for disseminating empowerment-related information in Sokoto South. This study will explore the role of local print media in raising awareness of women's empowerment programs and assess its impact on the participation of rural women in such programs.

The findings will also highlight the challenges faced by print media in rural areas and suggest ways to enhance its effectiveness in promoting women’s rights and opportunities.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Sokoto South Local Government, Sokoto State, examining the role of print media in promoting women’s empowerment programs among rural women. The study will assess the content of local newspapers and interview rural women to understand the impact of these media messages. Limitations of the study include challenges in measuring direct changes in women's empowerment due to media exposure, as empowerment is influenced by multiple factors. Additionally, access to rural women in remote areas might pose challenges for data collection.
